Mercury Constructions transition from OHSAS18001 to ISO 45001

Recently, Mercury Construction has replaced the existing OHSAS18001 standard with the new ISO45001 to make sure we have updated processes and procedures within the workplace. This also ensures our processes are in line with all new government legislation around health and safety.

So, more importantly, what’s the actual difference? Mercury Construction pride ourselves on keeping updated with all new standards introduced into the industry and the OHSAS18001 was the British Standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It enables compliance with organisations to demonstrate that there is a system in place for health and safety. With an ever-changing work environment, these standards must be regularly updated to correspond with developments within the workplace.

The new ISO 45001 is an international standard that focuses on finding and controlling risks rather than just hazards shown in OHSAS18001. It enables us to standardise health & safety regulations, whilst improving occupational health & safety performance. It also ensures compatibility with Mercury Constructions other standards, ISO9001 and ISO14001.

This standard was developed to mitigate any factors that can cause employees and businesses irreparable harm. Sadly, thousands of workers lose their lives each day to preventable instances of adverse workplace conditions. Mercury Construction works tirelessly to avoid these factors and the ISO 45001 will help us combat situations that could potentially cause our employees harm.

This standard is especially geared toward senior management, with the goal of helping businesses provide a healthy and safe working environment for their employees and everyone else who visits the workplace.

According to health and safety experts – including the professionals who worked on the ISO committee – ISO 45001 represents a landmark breakthrough. For the first time internationally, businesses of all sizes can now access a single framework that offers them a clear pathway to developing better and more robust occupational health and safety measures.

Mercury Construction is glad to be apart of this industry standard and are looking forward to working alongside it.
