Plymstock School

Mercury won the tender to demolish and build a new six classroom construction in May 2013 at Plymstock School.

Mercury were commensurate professionals and the school were always kept up to date with developments and changes that needed to be made. Monthly meetings were held where budgets, delays, changes etc were discussed, with Mercury more than happy to accommodate any changes that the school wished to make. Any increases in costs were communicated as soon as recognised and therefore were able to be budgeted for or amendments made to the original design to enable costs to be met.

The school were able to access the site at any time with prior appointments and were always made to feel welcome.

The project was delivered on time despite delays imposed on Mercury by suppliers.

The school are delighted with the build including the finishing touches and suggestions made by Mercury eg blinds.

There have been a few snagging problems which were rectified extremely quickly and Plymstock School would certainly contract Mercury to undertake further developments in the school.

Holbeton Primary School

Dear Steve,

I am writing, on behalf of pupils, parents, staff and governors at Holbeton School, to thank you for your company’s amazing achievement in getting the school back to normal over the Christmas/New Year period.

When we discovered, on the afternoon of December 24th, (of all days!) that the whole of the ground floor of the school was flooded, we were resigned to not being back in school for weeks. This would have led to an inevitable interruption in the children’s education, and additional costs at a time of financial austerity. In fact the final touches to restoring the school took place yesterday, 5th January.

The view from parents, staff and members of our local community is, in a word ‘incredible’. People have been contacting me to congratulate me. My response is two-fold: it wasn’t me, it was a team of volunteers, who helped remove all the furniture and books on the 24th, then replaced them on the 5th and 6th; and secondly it was in fact down to the expertise of your team and your supporting contractors, all of whom were professional, helpful and efficient in drying the school, replacing skirting boards and wooden panels, cleaning and sanitising the carpets, and re-laying new vinyl.

We cannot thank you enough – all I can do, on behalf of all of us, is to express our heartfelt thanks for a fantastic outcome, from what we thought on Christmas Eve was a total disaster. We are very grateful.

With very best wishes

Phil Ward

Chair of Governors, Holbeton Primary School

Dear Sir

There were I  know, vexations along the way and I thank you for your patience and good humour. I was also impressed by the consistent good manners and helpfulness of your work force. In spite of the problems forced upon us I found it an enjoyable interlude in my life.

Dear Sir

I would like to express how impressed we were with the prompt service. The tradesman who attended was very quick to assess the job and to resolve the problem in a knowledgeable and professional manner.

Whilst on site he was able to give good advice on another matter in connection with our guttering/ waste pipes. We look forward to working with your company in the future

Knowle House Surgery

Dear Sir

I have used Mercury Construction, on a number of occasions. Each time the company had maintained the highest standards. Their building work is exemplary and their team is both helpful and professional.

Mercury Construction has maintained a good liaison policy and any snags are dealt with expediently and with little bother to the Surgery.

I have no hesitation in recommending Mercury Construction as their work is of high standard.

Holy Cross Catholic Primary School

When Holy Cross Catholic Primary School had its fire on 19th January, Mercury Construction were contracted to set about building temporary classroom space for us in the empty church next door. It was unbelievable how, from a roughly drawn sketch and initial conversations, three purpose built classrooms were established. In the space of two weeks, Steve Welch and his team had the school back together on the one site. This led me to write in my Head’s Report to Governors.

‘The speed of the work in re-establishing classroom space in the church I have already described to parents as “nothing short of miraculous.” Mercury Construction must take credit for that. The school was back as a single community after just two weeks.”

But it was not just the speed of the work that was impressive. There was very much a sense of team work and Mercury listened wonderfully to our needs. This particularly included all health and safety issues – so important for the children and staff – after the trauma of what happened.

The quality of the work was also outstanding. The way the walls have been built to fit in with the existing pillars, the consideration of lighting – both natural and electrical, the painting and fixing, were all done to such a high quality. It certainly does not look like temporary accommodation and we are hopeful that the school may be able to negotiate to retain this wonderful space.

After specifications were released to contractors for the refurbishment of the parts of the school affected by the fire, the Governors made it known that we would be delighted if Mercury were successful. When Vickery Holman, who are managing the project informed me that they had indeed won the contract, I felt reassured that the tight timescales and the excellent quality of the work would continue. The work so far has been very well done and I am confident that a new slogan for the company has been created:

Mercury Construction work – nothing short of miraculous!

Dear Sir

We have been meaning to write for some time since you completed the work on our property.

We wanted to congratulate you on a wonderful job of refurbishment you have done. We have been very impressed. I was in the building industry for thirty years and it is one of the best I have seen.

It is such as lovely vista looking down from the Quay Cottage past all the lovely apartments leading up to Derby Road. So we were worried that this would not be maintained. We have a particularly nice view of Quay Cottage and of course the excellent landscaping.

It seems no details has been overlooked it could not have been done any better.

Congratulations to you and your team once again

Yours faithfully

Topsham

The project involved the conversion of the roof space of a Grade II Listed Georgian cottage in Topsham, to provide a master bedroom and ensuite bathroom.

Being a listed building the quality of workmanship and attention to detail was paramount, and for a relatively small job there were some very complicated aspects. In addition the property was occupied for the duration of the contract by the owners, my parents!

Mercury Construction had an exceedingly professional attitude throughout the duration of the project.

Their organisation and coordination was first-class, as was their care and consideration towards the occupants and their approach to health and safety given the complicated constraints of the project.

But, perhaps most importantly, the quality of workmanship was excellent. They produced a very high standard of finish as required by a project of this nature, which both myself as the Architect, and my parents as the client were delighted with.

I would be more than happy to recommend Mercury Construction as would be pleased to provide and further information as required.

Rogers and Haynes Architects

Mercury Construction have proved themselves to be an extremely reliable, professional and enterprising building firm throughout the construction of our new extension. Involved from the very beginning of the scheme they have maintained an impressive standard of craftsmanship, backed up by a commendable level of customer care, offering advice and innovative, practical solutions to a number of design aspects that evolved during construction.

They introduced us to a firm of architects who listened to our family needs and produced an excellent plan which totally matched the requirement of our evolving family life. Good communication skills and a hardworking, pleasant, highly skilled workforce have led to a relatively stress-free construction period resulting in an extension that has added comfort, space and considerable value to our family home without the many hassles of moving house.

I would not hesitate in recommending, most highly, the services of Mercury Construction
